Swissôtel Uludağ Bursa fills a modernist sanatorium of the 1940s by the architects Emin Onat and Leman Tomsu, in the pine forest of Kirazlıyayla. It is a wellbeing hotel first: the Pürovel Spa & Sport has indoor and outdoor pools, a traditional Turkish hammam, saunas and steam rooms, yoga and a gym, and the hotel serves no alcohol.

A sanatorium in the pines

The building is the story. Designed in the 1940s by Emin Onat and Leman Tomsu as a sanatorium, its four buildings stand in 142,452 m² of pine forest at Kirazlıyayla on Uludağ, now restored as a five-star Swissôtel. Many rooms look into the trees; others have a private terrace over the grounds.

Pürovel Spa & Sport

Pürovel is Swissôtel’s own spa concept. Here it brings together indoor and outdoor pools (three pools in all, the hotel says), a traditional Turkish hammam, saunas and steam rooms, facials and massage, yoga and meditation sessions and a gym, with outdoor activities on the mountain. Towels, slippers and bathrobes are provided. Specialist consultations can also be booked for a personal wellness plan.

Rooms and suites

There are 173 rooms, 50 of them suites. Swiss Advantage rooms measure 26 m², Swiss Deluxe 30 m² and Swiss Superior 36 m²; the Deluxe Suite, at 35 m², suits families and small groups, the Superior Suite has 45 m², and the 55 m² Vitality Suite comes with its own private gym.

Eating and drinking

The hotel serves no alcohol, in keeping with its wellbeing concept, and cooks seasonal Turkish-inspired and international food. The Quarter is the all-day bistro of Turkish and international dishes; the Lobby Lounge in the atrium serves coffee, light meals and a daily tea time from 3.30pm. Chalet 1889, styled as a Swiss chalet, opens for dinner on Friday and Saturday, 6.30–10.30pm, and for Sunday brunch, noon–3pm. A private dining room in the main building takes small parties.

Our advice: come for the forest and the spa rather than for après-ski, take a Swiss Superior room or a suite with a terrace, and book Chalet 1889 for a Saturday dinner.
