From Helsinki the most direct road is national road 5, a little over 800 km, or drive via Oulu. The reindeer-herding area begins near Kiiminki on the Oulu route and at Suomussalmi via Kajaani, so drive with care. There is plenty of parking at no charge around Ruka, a paid parking hall in the village, and EV charging across Kuusamo.
