The Val d’Aran is the one Spanish valley that drains north, to the Atlantic, and it has its own language, Aranese. Its ski area, Baqueira Beret, celebrated its fiftieth winter in 2014/15 and has grown into the largest in Spain: four connected zones, 169 km of runs, a 1,110-metre vertical and a reputation for reliable snow.
An Atlantic valley
The Val d’Aran sits on the northern side of the Pyrenees, the only Spanish valley whose river, the Garona, runs to the Atlantic. That orientation brings it weather from the ocean and the snow for which Baqueira is known. The valley has its own language, Aranese, a form of Occitan, its own capital, Vielha, and villages of slate roofs and Romanesque churches strung along the river.
Four zones, one domain
Skiing began here in the 1960s, and the resort celebrated its fiftieth winter in 2014/15, when close to 200,000 skiers came over the Christmas holidays alone. Today the lift company lists 169 km of marked runs and 4 km of itineraries over 2,273 hectares, in four connected zones: Baqueira itself, above the village at 1,500 metres; the open, rolling Beret plateau, with 75 km; Bonaigua, up towards the pass of the same name; and Baciver, where the Tuc de Baciver hosted the opening round of the 2026 Freeride World Tour. Thirty-six lifts, including a nine-seat gondola, move 62,013 people an hour between 1,500 and 2,610 metres.
The only Spanish valley that faces the Atlantic, and the snow that comes with it.
A racing mountain
The Stadium Fernández Ochoa at Beret hosts the men’s slalom of the FIS Europa Cup on 4 and 5 February 2027, the third winter in a row that the circuit has come to the Val d’Aran. The FIS race director describes it as one of the longest courses on the European circuit.
Every budget
Baqueira has a luxury reputation, and the five-star Hotel Val de Neu and the Moët Winter Lounge live up to it. But the lift company publishes its 2026/27 prices in full, and they are fair: €74 for an adult day, €70 with a Baqueira PASS card, €49 for a child, and €55.50 for an afternoon from 1:30pm. Beginners pay €26 (children €15.50) for the learning areas, and skiers born in 1956 or before pay €8. Family pensions in Arties and Vielha cost far less than the hotels at the lifts, and Baby Baqueira looks after children from six months.
Our advice: stay at Baqueira 1500 to walk to the gondola, or in Arties or Vielha for village life and Aranese cooking; avoid the Spanish holiday peaks at Christmas, Carnival and Easter if you can, and check the lift company’s site for opening dates, which are announced in the autumn.
