Dalmunzie Castle Hotel, a former laird’s mansion in the Scots Baronial style, lies at the end of a quiet glen at Spittal of Glenshee, on an estate whose history goes back to 1510. Its rooms run from doubles to Four-Poster and Tower rooms and the Castle and Arbuthnot suites, and its kitchen cooks authentically Scottish food from local, seasonal produce.

At the end of the glen

Dalmunzie stands at Spittal of Glenshee, on the southern side of the Cairnwell Pass and the road to the Glenshee ski centre, in an estate whose history reaches back to 1510. The house is a former laird’s mansion in the Scots Baronial style, with fires and lounges, and the estate has seven cottages too. The hotel’s webcam watches the snow gates on the ski road.

Rooms and suites

Rooms run from Double and King or Twin rooms to Four-Poster rooms, Tower rooms and Family rooms, with two suites: the Castle Suite and the Arbuthnot Suite.

Eating and drinking

A small kitchen team cooks authentically Scottish dishes from local, seasonal produce, with breakfast, dinner and a bar and lounge menu. The bar pours a varied selection of single malts from across Scotland, gins from the nearby Persie distillery and old and new world wines, and afternoon tea is served.

The estate

The 103 km Cateran Trail passes the door. The estate has golf, salmon and brown trout fishing in season, and stalking, and the Glas Tulaichean hill race climbs 670 metres over 7 km. A Bronze Age standing stone and burial cairn stand near Glenshee parish church.

Our advice: book a Tower or Four-Poster room, check the ski-road webcam before breakfast, and try a Persie gin by the fire in the evening.
