About Jahorina: the back story
Within an hour of Sarajevo’s old bazaar, the road climbs into dense spruce forest and opens onto the Olympic mountain. Jahorina hosted the women’s alpine events of the 1984 Winter Olympics, and today it is the largest ski area in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a modern gondola, floodlit runs and prices that make Alpine regulars look twice.
The Olympic mountain
In February 1984, the world’s best women skiers raced down Jahorina’s slopes at the Sarajevo Winter Olympics, while the men raced on Bjelašnica across the valley. More than four decades later, the Olympic spirit still sets the tone: the resort is run by the Olympic Centre Jahorina, and the 1984 mascot, a little wolf called Vučko, lends his name to one of its best-known hotels.
The mountain today
Jahorina rises through spruce and fir to Ogorjelica, its highest point at 1,916 metres. The Olympic Centre lists 54 kilometres of pistes groomed to FIS standards and 18 lifts with room for around 35,000 skiers an hour, so queues are rarely long. The centrepiece is the Poljice gondola, whose 68 cabins carry skiers up through the forest; one of them is a VIP cabin, fitted with leather seats and served with champagne and mezze.
Ski an Olympic piste in the morning and be back in Sarajevo’s bazaar for dinner.
Day and night
When the sun goes down, ten homologated runs stay lit for night skiing, and a 600-metre sledding track keeps children happy. Beyond the pistes there are snowshoe walks, a snow park, rides on a snow groomer and, in summer, an adventure park, zipline and mountain-bike trails.
Every budget
This is where Jahorina shines. A full-price adult day pass for 2026/27 is 98 KM, about €50, and the resort’s own calendar takes 15 to 30 per cent off in the quieter weeks, from opening day on 6 December to the spring snow of March. Hotels range from family-run guesthouses to spa hotels with indoor pools, and Sarajevo, with its restaurants, museums and airport, is less than an hour away.
Our advice: come in the second half of January or early March for the discounted weeks, book a hotel on Olimpijska so you can walk to the lifts, and keep one evening for the floodlit runs. Fit winter tyres or chains for the drive up.
