The back story

About Jasná: the back story

Jasná sits at the head of Demänovská dolina, a limestone valley of caves in the Low Tatras, below Mt Chopok. People have skied here for more than a century; today Tatry Mountain Resorts runs about 50 km of pistes on both faces of the mountain, linked over the summit by gondolas.

A valley of caves

Demänovská dolina runs south from Liptovský Mikuláš into the Low Tatras, a limestone valley whose caves were lived in in prehistoric times. Its first weekend cabins went up after the First World War, and on 1 August 1964 the valley became a village of its own, Demänovská Dolina, taking in Tri Studničky, Jaskyne, Repiská, Lúčky and Jasná.

The first skis and the first chairlift

The resort’s own history credits Kornel Stodola, a leather worker from Liptovský Mikuláš, with bringing the first skis to Liptov in the late nineteenth century. Four years after the Second World War, the first section of a cable car climbed the north face of Chopok, and by the late 1950s open, sideways-facing chairs linked the north and south faces over the top. Those old lines closed at the end of the 1990s; one original tower and chair still stand by the old boarding station.

One mountain, two faces, and the widest skiing in Slovakia.

Two faces, one mountain

Today Jasná is run by Tatry Mountain Resorts (TMR), with about 50 km of groomed pistes, 20 lifts and tows and twelve freeride zones that, unusually, you reach by gondola. On the north side, the 15-seat Doppelmayr gondola from Biela Púť to Priehyba, a €17 million investment opened in the 2022/23 winter, meets the wind-resistant Funitel, which runs on two cables and carries you to the top of Chopok in about six and a half minutes. From the south, 15-seat gondolas climb from Krupová through Kosodrevina to the summit, 920 vertical metres in all.

The Rotunda and the races

Where the two sides meet stands the Rotunda, a round restaurant at 2,004 metres with three rooms for overnight guests. Jasná is the home resort of Petra Vlhová, and the slope that bears her name carries the women’s World Cup giant slalom and slalom on 23 and 24 January 2027, from Luková to Koliesko.

Every budget

Ski passes are sold on Gopass like airline tickets: the earlier you book online, the less you pay. TMR’s eight hotels in the valley, from the boutique Pošta to the retro Hotel SKI, include lift and water-park tickets in the stay, and the thermal pools of Tatralandia and Bešeňová are a short drive away.

Our advice: ski the north side early, cross to the quieter, sunnier south side at midday, and book passes on Gopass as soon as your dates are fixed.
