About Hotel Jerome, Auberge Collection

Hotel Jerome opened in 1889 at the height of Aspen’s silver boom and is the only Aspen hotel to have survived the crash, the long pre-ski winters and the Depression. Today, as part of the Auberge Collection, it pairs reimagined rooms and suites with Yarrow Spa, a heated pool, Prospect and the legendary J-Bar.

A Main Street landmark

Hotel Jerome stands at 330 East Main Street, in the heart of downtown Aspen, within walking distance of the shops, galleries and restaurants and a few minutes from Aspen Mountain. It opened in 1889 at the height of the silver boom; cowboys rode through its doors, 10th Mountain Division soldiers drank here after training, and the hotel has stayed the town’s social hub ever since. Note that it usually closes for a spell in spring.

Yarrow Spa and the pool

Yarrow Spa, on the lower level, is a small botanical spa with three private treatment rooms, a co-ed relaxation room where you are served locally blended botanical tea, and an individual steam shower for men and for women. Arrive 30 minutes early and you are welcomed with a Grounding Botanical Foot Soak. Treatments draw on Rocky Mountain botanicals, and from November Biologique Recherche brings its French facial methods to the spa.

The social hub of Aspen since 1889, in the hotel’s words, where all great stories were born and are told.

Hotel guests also have a heated outdoor pool and hot tubs and a 24-hour fitness centre, both with room-key access, and weekend open-air Pilates on the Front Lawn in summer.

Rooms and suites

Newly reimagined rooms take a modern view of Western heritage, with custom craftsmanship, rich leathers and dark woods. The hotel offers Deluxe Rooms, Junior Suites, Luxury Suites and Residential Suites; accessible rooms reach up to 650 sq ft, and the largest residential suite has a private elevator entrance, outdoor patios, three bedrooms and more than 2,000 sq ft with mountain views.

Eating and drinking

Prospect is the main restaurant, with bold seasonal cooking from local ingredients and Western portraits by the photographer David Yarrow on the walls; it serves weekday lunch, weekend brunch and a three-course pre-theatre menu at 5pm. The J-Bar is the 19th-century saloon where Hunter S. Thompson kept his unofficial office, open until 11pm, or midnight Thursday to Saturday. The Living Room is the convivial lounge, Bad Harriet an intimate subterranean cocktail bar beneath the old Aspen Times building, with DJs Thursday to Saturday from 10pm, and Felix Roasting Co. does the coffee.

Ski services and families

An on-site ski concierge, ski storage and a shuttle make it easy to ski all four Aspen Snowmass mountains. Families are welcome, with cribs, children’s menus, connecting rooms and childcare arranged through the concierge, and up to two pets may stay.

Our advice: stay for the history and the J-Bar, book a treatment and arrive early for the foot-soak welcome, and dine at Prospect before a night at Bad Harriet.
