Cairngorm Mountain rises above Glenmore and Loch Morlich, ten miles from Aviemore, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. It is Scotland’s best-known ski area, with the UK’s highest funicular railway, more than 30 km of pisted runs and 13 surface lifts, and a season that, in a good winter, can run from November into May.
A railway to the snow
The great set piece at Cairngorm is the mountain railway: a funicular, the only one of its kind in Scotland and the highest in the UK, which climbs to the Ptarmigan top station at 1,097 metres in about eight minutes. Up there you find the Ptarmigan Restaurant and the Shop at the Top, with views across Strathspey. The funicular returned to service in February 2025, and it now runs all year for sightseers as well as skiers.

The ski area
The operator describes Cairngorm as Scotland’s ultimate winter playground: more than 30 km of pisted runs, 13 surface lifts and freestyle terrain, from gentle beginner slopes at the base to the Ptarmigan Bowl near the top. A full-time ski patrol looks after the marked area, and the lift company releases lift passes only a short time ahead, so that numbers match the terrain, uplift and weather on the day.

A season that follows the weather
Skiing in Scotland is never guaranteed, and Cairngorm says so plainly. In 2025/26 the operator ran lift-assisted snowsports from November right through to Monday 4 May 2026, when the last patchy runs in the Ptarmigan Bowl closed; in leaner winters the season is far shorter. Watch the mountain report and webcams, book the day before, and be ready to change plans if the wind gets up.
Learning here
Cairngorm does not run its own ski school. Instead, independent local schools teach on the mountain, among them Free-Ski, the Aviemore School of Snowsports and Ski Norwest, and first-time skiers of any age must book a lesson unless they are with a competent skier. Disability Snowsport UK has its office in the Day Lodge, and adaptive skiing has been part of the mountain for many years.
Aviemore, the base
Aviemore, on the Highland Main Line, is the base for almost everyone: hotels, hostels, ski-hire shops and pubs, a railway station served by the Caledonian Sleeper from London, and a regular bus to the mountain. Glenmore, with its youth hostel and the sandy shore of Loch Morlich, lies along the ski road.
