About Kildrummy Inn rooms

Kildrummy Inn is a family-run traditional inn on the River Don in Aberdeenshire, at the eastern edge of the Cairngorms, with a history going back to 1828. Its four superior king rooms, Dukestone, The Willows, Kinclune and Clochter, are named after salmon pools on the river, with period fittings and claw-foot baths, and its restaurant is led by chef patron David Littlewood.

An inn since 1828

In 1828 the Society House at Kildrummy was offered for lease as an inn on the route of the Lord Forbes coach, and it has served travellers and locals ever since. It stands at Kildrummy, near Alford, on the Upper Don, a drive across the hills from the Lecht.

The rooms

There are four superior king rooms, each decorated differently and named after salmon-fishing pools on the Don: Dukestone, The Willows, Kinclune and Clochter. They are imaginatively restored with period fittings and plush linens; the bathrooms have claw-foot baths, Victorian-style showers and double basins in some, bathrobes in all, and Gordon Castle Walled Garden toiletries. Retro radios, tea and coffee and Scottish treats complete the rooms.

Quaint yet lavish, in the inn’s words.

Eating and drinking

The restaurant is the inn’s crowning glory, celebrating local, seasonal produce. Chef patron David Littlewood and head chef Alexandria Hay draw on the land and the sea, marrying tradition and modern ideas. You choose your dishes in the whisky snug or the lounge before sitting down in the dining room. The club-style whisky snug shows off its malt collection in illuminated niches, like an advent calendar of bottles.

Fishing

Residents have the inn’s own beat on the River Don: three miles of single bank and one of double bank, 21 named pools and up to four rods, for salmon from midsummer and wild brown trout from 15 March. Fishing is for hotel residents only.

Our advice: book one of the four king rooms for a weekend, ski the Lecht by day, and choose your dinner over a dram in the whisky snug.
