About Sun Valley Lodge
Sun Valley Lodge, first built in 1936, is the flagship of the resort, in the heart of Sun Valley Village. It has the 20,000 sq ft Spa at Sun Valley, a glass-enclosed outdoor pool, rooms and suites with granite details, and the Duchin Lounge and Gretchen’s in its lobby.
The original
Sun Valley was founded by Averell Harriman, and the Lodge, built in 1936, was its centrepiece. It stands just off Sun Valley Road in the village, with the ice rink, the shops and the restaurants around it, and resort shuttles run to downtown Ketchum and Friedman Memorial Airport.
The Spa at Sun Valley
The 20,000 sq ft destination spa, open daily from 8am to 6pm, offers massage, skincare, salon services and nail care. Its 2,300 sq ft fitness centre and movement studio run group classes and has weight-training equipment, and there is a yoga studio. Lodge guests have the glass-enclosed outdoor pool and a hot tub, with the Poolside Café alongside; the resort has three outdoor pools in all.

Rooms and suites
All rooms have granite details, upscale furnishings and flat-screen TVs. Lodge Premier rooms have a king bed and a spa-inspired bathroom; Lodge Suites add a fold-out sofa and, in some, a fireplace dividing the sitting area from the bedroom. Rink View Suites overlook the famous outdoor ice rink and the mountains, Terrace Suites have a private terrace and fireplace, and the Celebrity Suites honour figures from the resort’s past, from Harriman to Ernest Hemingway, Clint Eastwood and Marilyn Monroe, with photographs from the archives. A limited number of rooms welcome dogs.
Eating and drinking
Gretchen’s, named after the champion skier Gretchen Fraser and hung with ski memorabilia, serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in the lobby, and the Duchin Lounge pours handmade cocktails and craft beer. In-room dining is available for Lodge guests. Elsewhere in the resort, The Roundhouse, atop the gondola at 7,700 ft, and Trail Creek Cabin, for rustic, romantic dinners, are the great occasions.
Our advice: book a Rink View Suite for the view over the skaters, give an afternoon to the spa, and keep one dinner for Trail Creek Cabin.
