About Poiana Brașov: the back story

Poiana Brașov sits in a high clearing on the slopes of Postăvarul, among spruce and fir, with the medieval city of Brașov just below. It is a favourite place to learn to ski, and its hotels, cable cars and slopes make it the country’s best-known winter resort.

The mountain

Above the resort rises Postăvarul, whose frosted limestone crown is the backdrop to every run. The cable-car operator, Ana Teleferic, lists twelve slopes of every grade, with snow cover four to five months a year, reached by the Postăvarul Express gondola, the Capra Neagră and Kanzel cable cars, the Lupului and Ruia chairlifts and a handful of drag lifts.

The runs

Beginners start on the gentle Bradul and Stadion slopes by the resort; Bradul is floodlit for night skiing. Confident skiers head for Lupului, the Wolf, a difficult run dropping 728 metres over 2.6 kilometres, or Subteleferic beneath the cable car, while Drumul Roșu, the Red Road, winds 4.75 kilometres down the mountain on easier gradients.

A forest clearing in the Carpathians, with a medieval city at the bottom of the hill.

Brașov below

Just below, Brașov is one of Transylvania’s great medieval cities, with the Tâmpa cable car, whose Panoramic Restaurant, a city landmark since the 1970s, reopened in October 2025. Many skiers stay in town and ride city bus 20 up to the slopes.

Every budget

In 2025/26 an adult day pass cost 240 lei and six days 900 lei, and a points card lets occasional skiers pay by the ride. Hotels run from the long-established Ana and Alpin resorts to the Teleferic Grand Hotel, with pools, spas and nightlife.

Our advice: learn on Bradul and Stadion, book lessons with the Ana Ski & Snowboard School, and on a clear day ride the gondola for the view across the Carpathians. Leave an evening for Brașov’s old town.
