About Tradition Julen Hotel
The Tradition Julen, a four-star superior, has welcomed guests to its wooden house in the centre of Zermatt since 1937, and the Julen family has hosted visitors since 1910. Its 31 rooms and suites are chalet-style, the spa has a 28 °C indoor pool and saunas, and the Restaurant Julen and the Schäferstube cook lamb from the family’s own flock.
A family house in the village
The Julens have been hosts in Zermatt since 1910, when they opened a first inn, and today they run two hotels, restaurants, a farm and a dairy. The Tradition Julen, in the centre of the village, has been a hotel since 1937; its sister house, the Alpenhof, is a few steps from the Sunnegga-Rothorn railway.
The spa
The indoor pool is heated to 28 °C, and outside there is a cold-water pool for the brave. The sauna area has a biosauna, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, a cold plunge and a massage room. The saunas are a nude zone for guests aged 16 and over, while the pools and a family sauna are open to children of any age. Hotel guests also have access to the Alpenhof spa.
Welcome to Tradition Julen, in Zermatt since 1910, in the family’s words.
Guests can use the pool from 7.00 and the wellness area from 10.00, and on your last day the spa stays yours until 20.00 after check-out. Massages are booked separately.
Rooms and suites
There are 31 rooms and suites in chalet style, with plenty of wood and some balconies facing the Matterhorn. They run from single and double rooms in chalet style and Matterhorn doubles to Superior Comfort rooms and the Family, Panorama and Matterhorn suites.
Eating and drinking
The family farm supplies the kitchens. Paul Julen began breeding sheep in 1972, and lamb is the house speciality. Restaurant Julen serves Valais cooking (lamb, beef fillet and cheese fondue) by an open fire, with an aperitif bar and a terrace. The Schäferstube is the place for raclette, cheese and meat fondue and lamb from the wood-fired grill. At the Alpenhof, Restaurant Im Hof cooks the farm’s meat and cheese with a list of more than 200 wines.
Families
Children up to the age of eight stay in their parents’ room at no charge, using an existing sofa or cot, and breakfast is included. In winter guests can visit the family’s sheep barn.
Our advice: book a Matterhorn double or suite, swim before breakfast, and reserve the Schäferstube for a fondue night and Restaurant Julen for the lamb.
