About Alù Mountain Design Hotel
Alù stands in a large garden right opposite the Bormio 2000 cable car and the end of the ski slopes, a short walk from the centre. Its new adults-only spa (16+) has an infinity stone pool with hydromassage, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath and a relaxation area, and the restaurant serves Valtellina and Mediterranean dishes.
Opposite the cable car
Alù is a ski-in, ski-out hotel: it stands right opposite the Bormio 2000 cable car and the arrival point of the ski slopes, in a large, well-tended garden in a quiet spot away from traffic, a short walk from the town centre. Its name comes from a Celtic god represented by the eagle, now the symbol of the hotel. It is also a bike hotel in summer.
The spa
The new Wellness & Spa is for adults only, from 16, including the pool. There is an infinity stone pool with hydromassage, a Finnish sauna, a steam bath, the Comfort Leg water massage for legs and back, a large relaxation area, an outdoor area and a massage room. The pool and relaxation area open from 2pm to 7.30pm, the sauna and steam bath from 3.30pm to 7.30pm; access is booked at the hotel. The Terme di Bormio are a five-minute drive away.
The hotel owes its name to a Celtic god represented by the eagle, now the symbol of the hotel, in its own words.
Rooms and chalets
Rooms and suites are in Alpine design. In the garden, two Garden Chalets offer independence with hotel service: a bedroom with a king-size bed, a living area with a sofa bed, a bathroom and direct access to the garden, with breakfast and half board in the hotel.
Eating and drinking
The dining room has wooden floors and ceilings and loden curtains. Dinner is a four-course menu of Valtellina and Mediterranean dishes: a buffet of starters, salads, grilled vegetables, local cured meats and cheeses, then a choice of three first and three main courses, and homemade desserts such as buckwheat and bilberry cake and bisciola. Look for pizzoccheri, bresaola, sciatt and polenta with venison, with Valtellina wines; in summer, herbs come from the kitchen garden.
Our advice: ski back to the door, book the spa for 4pm, and order the pizzoccheri on your first night.
