The Tschol family, a house from 1570 · In depth
About Hotel Schwarzer Adler
The Schwarzer Adler, at Dorfstraße 35 in the centre of St. Anton, has been run by the Tschol family for five generations in a house dating from 1570. It has 75 rooms and four apartments, the Adler Spa with a heated Sky Pool, an indoor pool and six saunas, and a ski and boot depot at the Galzigbahn, 400 metres away.
A house from 1570
The Schwarzer Adler stands on Dorfstraße in the middle of St. Anton, about 400 metres from the Galzigbahn. Its history goes back to 1570, and the Tschol family runs it in the fifth generation. In winter 2026–27 it opens from 4 December to 11 April.
The Adler Spa
The Sky Pool is the highlight: a heated outdoor pool with panoramic views of the Arlberg, at about 34 °C in winter. Inside, a large pool of about 30 °C has massage jets and loungers. The sauna world has six rooms: an old-wood sauna of up to about 100 °C, a bio sauna of about 60 °C, a textile sauna for swimwear, a brine steam bath, infrared cabins and an outdoor Kelo sauna house of Finnish pine. There is a quiet room of wood and stone and a Technogym gym included for guests.
Hospitality since 1570, family-run in the fifth generation, in the hotel’s words.
The spa opens daily from 8.00 to 21.00, and on departure day you can use it until 18.00 after check-out. Children are welcome in the indoor pool and the textile area is designed for families; the nude sauna area is for adults only. Adler Vital massages and body treatments are booked at reception.
Rooms and apartments
There are 75 rooms and four Adler apartments in the annex. Singles measure 20–25 m², doubles from 30 m² (Gampen) and 35 m² (Rendl) to 38 m² (Kapall and Scheibler) and 40 m² (Valluga and Patteriol). The family suite with balcony is 56 m², for up to five, the two-bedroom suite 68 m², and the Adler apartments 60 m².
Eating and drinking
There is no classic half board: in winter dinner is à la carte, from 18.30 to 20.30, with regional and international cooking and a list of Austrian and international wines, and the HOTEL Bar for the evening. The breakfast buffet runs from 7.30 to 10.30, and cakes and coffee are served in the afternoon. In summer the Adler Summer Bistro takes over.
For skiers
In winter the hotel keeps a ski and boot depot at the Galzigbahn, included for guests, so you walk to the lift in shoes.
Our advice: book a Valluga or Patteriol double, or the family suite if you have children, leave your skis at the Galzigbahn depot, and end the day in the Sky Pool at dusk.
