The Schneekarhütte is a small mountain hotel on the Horberg above Mayrhofen, ski-in and ski-out, run by the Bair family for 38 years. It has eight suites and rooms, a sauna and relaxation area, a chalet bar with a fireplace and a kitchen led by Andreas Bierig, using produce from the family’s organic farm where it can.

A hut that became a hotel

The Schneekarhütte stands high on the Horberg, in the Mayrhofen ski area, with skiing to and from the door. The Bair family has run it for 38 years, continuing the work of Aloisia and Josef “Sepp” Bair, and a renovation in 2012 added guest rooms and a bistro. Since 2022 it has also opened in summer, for hikers and cyclists.

Sauna and relaxation

The wellness area is small: a sauna and a steam sauna, with waterbeds and floating loungers for resting with the mountains outside.

The suites

There are eight suites and rooms, each with its own name and character. The Gold Suite measures 93 m² and sleeps six, and the Imperator Suite is 60 m². The Marble Suite is 38 m², the Cuddle Suite 27 m² and the Tower Suite 20 m², and the Crystal Glass and Native rooms 21 m² each, with the snug Lodge Room at 14 m².

Eating and drinking

Andreas Bierig leads the kitchen: no ready-made products, organic or own-farm ingredients where possible, and Austrian classics alongside more refined dishes. The family has farmed organically on the mountain for more than 20 years. The Chalet Bar has a fireplace, craft cocktails and fine wines, and the list, chosen by the sommelier Aloisia Bair, runs from Austrian classics to biodynamic wines.

Our advice: book the Imperator or Gold suite, stay for dinner after the lifts close, and be first on the pistes in the morning.
