Tamarack Lodge stands on the east shore of Twin Lakes in the Mammoth Lakes Basin, where paved roads give way to wilderness. Built in 1924, it offers rooms and private cabins, a cross-country ski centre on its doorstep and The Lakefront Restaurant, part of the Mammoth Lodging Collection.

On Twin Lakes

The lodge was built in 1924 on the shore of Twin Lakes, with views of Crystal Crag and the Mammoth Crest, and its original stone fireplace still welcomes guests in the lobby. In winter the lakes freeze under snow; in summer you rent a paddle board or a bike at the door.

Trails rather than a spa

There is no spa here. The great pleasure is the Tamarack Cross-Country Ski Center, with more than 19 miles of secluded, groomed trails for skiing and snowshoeing, and guests save on trail passes and rentals. Guests also have off-site pool access, and there are fire pits, covered picnic tables and barbecues outside.

Rooms and cabins

Rooms are in the historic lodge, and private cabins are spread along the shore and among the trees, from two-bedroom Deluxe Cabins with decks to Historic Three-Bedroom Cabins; some, like Cabin 14, look over Twin Lakes. Dogs are welcome, and a continental breakfast is included.

The Lakefront Restaurant

Inside the lodge, The Lakefront Restaurant has forested views over Twin Lakes, a seasonal menu and an extensive wine collection, one of the finest restaurants in Mammoth, as the lodge puts it.

Our advice: book a cabin with a lake view, ski the trails in the morning and the mountain in the afternoon, and reserve The Lakefront for dinner.
