About von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort

The von Trapp Family Lodge & Resort stands on 2,600 acres above Stowe, on the farm the Trapp Family Singers bought in 1942 because its views reminded them of Austria. Still owned and run by the family, the 96-room alpine lodge offers a fitness centre with an indoor pool, an outdoor hot tub, cross-country trails and four places to eat.

The family’s farm

In 1942, between world tours, the von Trapp family bought a farm in Stowe whose mountain views recalled their homeland. They began welcoming guests to a 27-room family lodge in 1950; after a fire in 1980, the present Austrian-style lodge opened in 1983, the West Wing followed in 2000, and all public spaces and rooms were renovated in 2025. The family still owns and runs the whole property.

Fitness centre, pools and massage

The fitness centre, a few steps from the main lodge, has an indoor pool, a sauna, a rock-climbing wall, three massage rooms, studios for yoga and classes, tennis and pickleball, separate locker rooms and a family changing room; it is also home to the Mountain Kids Club. The outdoor hot tub, for eight, is surrounded by heated slate so your feet stay warm in winter. In summer the heated outdoor pool looks out to the Worcester Range. A resort fee covers fitness-centre access, parking, the winter weekend ski shuttle to Stowe Mountain Resort and most tours and activities.

A Little of Austria… A Lot of Vermont, in the resort’s words.

Rooms, guest houses and villas

The main lodge has 96 rooms and suites with American and European furnishings and mountain views from the balconies; some Premier rooms connect. Guest House chalets and villas give families more space. Dogs are welcome in some rooms.

Eating and drinking

The Main Dining Room serves a Vermont-style breakfast buffet and European-inspired dinners with live piano each evening. The Lounge has Austrian and American dishes, afternoon tea and a patio facing the Worcester Range. The von Trapp Brewing Bierhall, on the ski and bike trails, serves the family’s lagers with food from a wood-fired parrilla grill, and the Kaffeehaus bakes Austrian pastries from 7am.

Winter on the trails

The resort’s Outdoor Center runs cross-country skiing and snowshoeing on trails from the door, with sleigh rides in season and backcountry skiing. Stowe Mountain Resort is a short drive.

Our advice: book a balcony room in the main lodge, ski the Nordic trails to the Bierhall for lunch, and end the day in the hot tub on its heated slate.
