Pepi’s, in the heart of Vail Village · In depth
About Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer
Hotel Gasthof Gramshammer, known to all as Pepi’s, was established in 1964 by the Gramshammer family in Vail’s early years and remains true to its Austrian heritage. It has 38 individually designed rooms, a restaurant and bar at the centre of village life, a small wellness area and the family’s own ski shop.
An Austrian inn since 1964
Pepi’s stands on Gore Creek Drive in the very heart of Vail Village, steps from the base of the mountain, and has been a favourite since Vail’s opening days. Pepi and Sheika Gramshammer built it in the image of an Austrian Gasthof, and the hotel still feels like one: warm wood, mountain views and a welcome that brings guests back year after year. The Town of Vail shuttle stops outside the entrance.
Wellness
There is no grand spa, but the essentials are here. The hotel has a jacuzzi, sauna and steam room, a fitness room with treadmill, elliptical trainer, bikes and weights, and massages that can be arranged with the front desk; book them ahead to be sure of a time.
Austrian Gemütlichkeit and American comfort, in the hotel’s words.
Rooms
The 38 rooms include five apartments and a penthouse suite, in Standard, Deluxe, Riverside and Specialty Suite categories. No two are the same, which is part of the charm, and regulars often ask for the room they had last time.
Eating and drinking
Pepi’s is as much a restaurant as a hotel. The main dining room serves Continental and American dishes with an Austrian accent; the Antlers Room, open in winter, is known for its wild game dinners; and Pepi’s covered deck is one of the village’s great outdoor terraces in any season. Pepi’s Bar is the après-ski hot spot, with live entertainment and a festive crowd.
Pepi Sports
Pepi Sports, opened by the Gramshammers in 1968, sits next to the lobby, with ski, snowboard and touring rentals, custom boot fitting and, in summer, bikes and e-bikes. Hotel guests receive a discount on merchandise and rentals.
Our advice: ask for a Riverside room, rent your skis next door, and be on the deck at Pepi’s when the lifts close. Reserve the Antlers Room for a winter night of game.
