Rooms Kazbegi has grown out of a Soviet-era sanatorium in Stepantsminda, across the Jvari Pass from Gudauri, wood-clad for the 21st century. Inside are worn brick, reclaimed wood and cognac leather; a broad terrace runs the length of the building facing Mount Kazbek, and there is a gym, spa and pool, Kazbegi Kitchen and a Lobby Bar.

A sanatorium reborn

The hotel stands on the site of a Soviet-era sanatorium in Stepantsminda, beyond the Jvari Pass from Gudauri. The modernist complex has been wood-clad for the 21st century, and a broad terrace runs its whole length, looking straight at Mount Kazbek and Gergeti Trinity Church.

Inside

Interiors mix worn brick, reclaimed wood and cognac leather with historic and contemporary furniture. The hotel has a gym, a spa and a pool, and on clear nights the open lawn, away from other lights, is made for stargazing.

Rooms

Rooms face the forest or the mountain. Standard Twin and King rooms and Executive rooms come in both views; the Signature Room faces the forest, and the Signature Suite the mountain.

Eating and drinking

Kazbegi Kitchen cooks classic Georgian food from local, seasonal produce, with a long list of Georgian wines, among them Qvevri wine fermented in clay vessels. The Lobby Bar, decorated with wildflowers and candles, serves mixologists’ cocktails with a terrace view of Kazbek and Gergeti, and the Lounge has a locally inspired menu.

Our advice: book a mountain-view room, ski Gudauri by day and cross the pass for the evening, and take a glass of Qvevri wine on the terrace at sunset.
